The one 'suspend belief' bit of the series is the fact that the twins, Patrick and Finn, can communicate with each other telepathically. Although it is an extreme example of such communication, it isn't totally far-fetched and will be a running thread throughout the stories. It helps as they become part of 'Gemini & Flowers', Tom's detective business and will have some interesting aspects as they get older, start having deeper relationships with other people etc.
More important than the telepathy is their relationship with Mike, who has always been their 'parent' of choice, even when their own parents were still alive. Mike looked after the twins when their parents were working and he relied on the twins for inspiration and, later, feedback, with his graphic novels and has given up a lot of his youth to look after them. They are his primary concern throughout the series, leading to arguments with Tom and Dax.
