Tom isn't the usual embittered old policeman of stereotypical crime novels. He's young, fit and was happy until he punched out one of his superior officers and was thrown out of the Metropolitan police. His struggle to come to terms with his new life outside the police, both financial and emotional, run through the stories that form the 'Gemini & Flowers' series.
He's got a few problems. His image and his reluctance to admit to who he really is sexually; he's got a lot of old-fashioned prejudices, especially when it comes to gay people raising children and his first few encounters with Mike Ash have mixed results.
