Mike Ash is obviously one of the main characters in the book and the whole 'Gemini & Flowers' mysteries. He is a cartoonist who started drawing as a very young child and managed to create a series that became very popular, thus saving the family home. So many children are either demonized in the press or victims of abuse; we forget that many do amazing things, supporting family members, coping with sick relatives or becoming great successes as singers or app designers.
By choosing to make Mike an artist, I gave him a profession that could be done from home so he could live and work from Rilton Castle as well as look after the twins at all times. However, he still has needs, both physical and emotional, which he has buried under all his responsibility until Tom arrives in the village...
