When it comes to detective fiction, my all time favorite has to be Sherlock Holmes. I started reading the original stories when I was very young and loved them all. I really enjoyed the relationship between Holmes and Watson and I have also loved the way he can survive so many incarnations on screen. I think the present BBC series is excellent but you can't beat the original stories.
Having said that, one of the very best of the 'new' type of Holmes novels has to be 'The Beekeeper's Apprentice' by Laurie R. King, published in 1994. Although later stories lost the plot a bit, this first book, looking at Holmes in later life, is truly wonderful. If you haven't read it, find it and do so!
