Rilton Castle is one of the most beautiful villages in England, with its special thatched cottages, all built by the Ash family to accommodate its farm workers back in the seventeenth century. The estate still owns most of these and lets them out to local rural workers and other essential people like nurses, teachers and police officers who would not be able to afford such homes in current circumstance. Most villages like this have seen the houses sold off as second homes to Londoners and remain empty during the week.
