I had my friend Michael round for dinner last night and we were discussing Mrs Fothergill, the prostitute in my series. He said she sounded like Mrs Fornby in Blott on the landscape, one of my favorite Tom Sharpe books. However, she is actually based on a prostitute I met when working for a year in Leeds as a rent collector in the Chapeltown area. Very lady-like, with a very clean and tidy home, she was a total dominatrix and very popular with older men. It is funny how things from your past crop up later in life, isn't it?
