The best of the Sherlock Holmes novels and that quote is one of the most frightening lines in any detective fiction. I was so excited when I first read this book as a child and ended up going to Dartmoor a few times just to experience the wild landscape...and Dartmoor prison really is a remote and terrifying place. There have been many films and TV versions but the book is still the best way to enjoy this story.
