Country Life is set in the village of Rilton Castle in Dorset in 2012. A modern-day highwayman has started robbing people driving through the quiet country lanes around the village and the police are mystified. He has not hurt anyone yet but people are starting to get scared.
The story looks at the effects of these crimes on the people who live in the village. Mike Ash, a young landowner and cartoonist who is raising his twin nephews alone. Lucy Barton, a potter who moved to the village after a nasty divorce. Her brother, Tom Flowers, who has just been thrown out of the police for striking a senior officer. Dax, a struggling artist, along with a randy vicar, a frustrated publican and, of course, Ramjap Shastri, the young Asian journalist. What happens to these and many other characters forms the basis of the story and the future series.
"I wanted to write a crime series where the people around the crime were just as important as the investigation. Too often we meet people on the edge of crimes in mystery novels but the focus is usually on the police; here it is the victims as well as the crimes that matter. I hope people will learn to love and care about the folk who live in Rilton Castle so the impact of the highwayman and other crimes in future books will draw people in to care and worry about their favorite characters."
