From above, the straight path of the village can clearly be seen. Rilton Castle was designed by Capability Brown at the request of the Ash family after the old village burnt down following an accident in the original forge. Sparks caught alight one of the cottage's thatched roofs and it spread between the tightly packed homes very quickly. The lord of the manor at that time then ordered Brown to come up with a similar layout but spacing the houses further apart.
