The first two books by Rennie Airth were stunning. His policeman, John Madden, was a good man struggling with very complex criminals and the writing and the settings were superb. They were both 'golden age' novels, in other words, set in the past as opposed to contemporary fiction. I didn't enjoy the third book as much but River of Darkness was exceptional.
